Velvet Learns a Lesson Velvet was a naughty little puppy. She did not like to mind her mother. Sometimes this got her into trouble. One day, while Velvet was playing on her favorite snowy hill beside her mother, she smelled something that smelled awfully good. Now Velvet and her mother had a very sharp sense of smell. Why, their noses could smell smells so well that they sometimes had a hard time ignoring what their noses were smelling. The most delicious smell drifted to Velvet’s nose that day...the smell of warm sugar cookies fresh from the oven...like the special kind that people baked at Christmas...for SANTA. She stuck her nose up into the air, twitched it back and forth, and darted quickly along the trail of this most delicious scent. She did not know how she got there, but she found herself staring into a window, only a little more than a few feet from a fresh batch of sugar cookies.

Velvet is a naughty puppy who doesn’t like to obey her mother. Sometimes this gets her into trouble. It’s especially difficult to behave when Velvet’s nose is filled with the most delicious scent she’s ever smelled. Velvet hears her mother calling her as she trots away toward the delicious aroma. But for Velvet, a mother’s scolding is far easier to ignore than a yummy scent. Velvet’s twitching nose leads her to a cozy cottage, where she finds three freshly baked sugar cookies laid nicely on a plate labeled For Santa. Before she knows it, Velvet has gobbled up one of the sugar cookies. As she turns to leave, Velvet finds herself nose-to-boot with a familiar man dressed all in red. It’s Santa Claus—and he doesn’t look happy with what he sees. Velvet Learns a Lesson offers parents a magical opportunity to demonstrate the importance of obedience to young children.
