My fathers’ name is Achor, the great grandson of Machir, whose great uncle was Joseph. My name is Paul. I was born in Egypt, but I am not an Egyptian. I am an Israelite. The story I am going to tell you, I lived. I want to begin at the time in my life that I started to remember well; I am twelve years old. Some of the earlier years I can remember, but only bits and pieces. I do remember my father and mother making bricks in the brick pits of Egypt. They were slaves of the Egyptian Pharaoh, and came home each day, exhausted from the long hard work in the brick pits. They were made to work long and hard hours in the Pits under cruel Task-Masters.
I remember my father saying many times, “When my Grand Father, Joseph was alive, there was a different Pharaoh on the Egyptian throne, and our people had it easier. We were not slaves, we were welcomed guest. He even gave us land of our own to till in the Land of Goshen.” “He respected our God, but now it is much different. Because our people are growing in number, the present Pharaoh has no thoughts about our God, and he feels we will one day be a threat because of our growth in number, he has made us his slaves. “Then he would look at Samuel, my younger brother and I and say, “But have heart my sons, we will get out of this one day.”
Now I am older, or maybe I am just thinking older, and things are different. My parents still work in the brick pits, and they are even working harder, they have to find their own straw for the mix. The ‘Taskmasters’ are very mean, and carry whips they use on us to make us work harder. However, there is a new ‘Spark” in my Fathers speech. A new hope is in the air.

About the Author
Jack E. Henderson was born in Hannibal, Missouri, in 1925. He served four years in the US Navy during World War II.He taught eighth grade in the public school system for fourteen years. He was ordained and served as a pastor of Baptist churches for twenty-six years. Since serving as pastor, he teaches Sunday school each Sunday. Jack and Mary, his wife, have seven children—four girls and three boys.
