Just as it is possible for the human heart or spirit to pray to God without making an audible sound in the natural realm, so it is possible for our spirit to sing without making an audible sound. Such a song can only be detected by another spirit. Although it is possible to pray to God with our spirit only and with our understanding only, when Paul used the word “also” in 1 Corinthians 14:15 it indicates that he wants us to pray with our understanding and our spirit at the same time whenever possible. Likewise, he used the word “also” in his instructions for us to sing with our spirit as well as our understanding, meaning he wants us to do them at the same time as much as possible. Again, I remind you that praying and singing are the only two expressions of worship which can be done with our spirit only. All other expressions of worship require our body to express them. There is no deeper communication known to mankind than to commune spirit to spirit with God! This is why prayer is the most powerful expression of individual worship given to mankind. In a group setting of worship, however, God has ordained that we “come before His presence with singing.” Music was created by God to be a unifying factor for the Body of Christ on both levels – spirit and natural understanding. Just like prayer is communion with God on a spirit-to-spirit level, music can both originate in and transcend to the human spirit, as well as to God’s spirit. God designed music to do this so we could experience the greatest unity possible within a setting of worshiping together.

Shamblin Stone is the founding director of The Worship College based in Wichita, Kansas, and has taught music ministry and worship at the college level since 1982. Stone is an author of several books, textbooks, and periodical articles as well as a seminar and conference speaker in Canada and the United States. He and his wife, Chris, live in Wichita.
