Energy spent, heaving to catch my breath, I kneel here watching the deat of this dragon. Then, I remember the premonition from long ago. I think, He’ll only resurrect another time—another place… As we roll hose, I launch into a fit—cough dark mucus and spit it to the ground. Kennedy watches me pitch the lung. He walks up with a cheesy grin on his face, and asks, “Duke, how many lives are we down to now?” I glance at my grimy boots and back. I say, “I don’t know. Guess I’ll keep goin’ until I run out of memories of Julie.” “Why not make a few with Sonay?” “You know, if she were here, I’d be right tempted.” “Hey, there’s Chaplain Reed. He’s gotta have a way to reach her.” “Yeah, maybe I’ll do that.” Kennedy gives me a shove, says, “Well, get ‘er done.” I saunter up to Chaplain Reed. He says, “Strong work, Duke… that was a dangerous one.” “Thanks, Chaplain, but God was watchin’ over us.” I think, For once. “Indeed. Glad everyone is safe.” I glance back at Kennedy—standing with his arms crossed and flicking a finger, like, ‘Go on.’ I turn back to Chaplain. “Speakin’ of everyone bein’ safe… any word from Sonay?” “She made it there safe and sound. I told her about Jimmy… she said to—” “Do you think she would mind if I tried to make contact?” “She wants me to give you this.” He hands me a sealed envelope with my name on it. “I hope this will answer your question.” My cheeks bulge with a sigh. “Me too. Thanks.” As I turn to leave, he snags my shoulder. “Duke, it has been a while since you’ve been at church.” I nod. “I know, but… I jus’ feel like… like bein’ alone.” “Russ, you are in my prayers. Please, stop in and we’ll have a talk—okay?” “I’ll see what I can do.”

The Dreams of Fire is the second novel in The Toll of Valor series. Russ ‘Duke’ Marlin is now a scarred veteran serving on Watanka Fire Department. About the Author
Lyle Markey holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Fort Hays State University. Responding to the need for dedicated emergency responders, Mr. Markey became a volunteer firefighter in 1986. Since then, he continues to serve with honor and distinction. Mr. Markey has woven some of his actual experiences into many adventures in The Toll of Valor, and now, The Dreams of Fire. His ongoing participation in emergency services, and his love of Jesus Christ, make Lyle Markey a must reader for the teen to adult fan of captivating adventure. Deputy Chief Markey was honored to be nominated for the Tom McGaughey Award of Merit, awarded by the state of Kansas. The City of Wamego, Kansas also recognized Mr. Markey for ‘Selfless and dedicated action in response to the Ferrellgas propane fire — August 26, 2000.’ Lyle and his wife, Kay, live near the Flint Hills of Kansas. They were married in May of 1982, and have two lovely daughters. Their home is shared with an adopted border collie, a red Doberman and two very spoiled cats. The Markeys are co-founders of Sparrow Specialty Coffee of Manhattan, Kansas—an outreach to the surrounding community in the name of Jesus Christ.
