Changing the subject, Marsh-Meadow looked at the kids with wide eyes and asked, “Have you ever seen a live eagle?” “Just when we go to the zoo,” Jessie said. Marsh-Meadow told the kids, “Well look up, and you will see your first American bald eagle soaring free in the beautiful blue sky.” Kenny shouted with glee, “Jessie, look, way up there. Do you see it? He is huge.” “Yes, I see him,” Jessie said with delight. “He is so pretty.” Marsh-Meadow butted in and said, “Correction, he is a she. Her name is Liberty, but we call her Libby. Watch out! She spotted you, and she is coming in for a landing.” As Libby perched on the branch nearby, she addressed Marsh-Meadow with a big smile. “Good morning, and how are you doing on this warm sunny day? Who are the two young friends with you?” As Marsh-Meadow replied, you could tell that he and Libby had been friends for a long time. He returned the friendly greeting and assured her that he was doing great. “Libby, these fine children just moved to Montana with their parents. Their names are Kenny and Jessie.” Libby looked straight at the children and spoke to them in a very friendly and welcoming voice. “Well, Kenny and Jessie, it is a pleasure to meet you both. My name is Libby, and I am an eagle.” The children stared back at her with pure delight. Kenny said, “We know. Marsh-Meadow told us. How did you see us from way up there in the sky?” Libby answered the children immediately. “I have very large eyes. They are almost as big as your own, and when I am flying, I can see for miles. I use my eyes to hunt for my next meal. I can see fish swimming in the water, and I can see a varmint running across the prairie, and I saw you with my friend Marsh-Meadow.”
