The next weekend, Augustine and two of his fellow students rode the school’s carriage into town. “It is nice of them to take us to town on the weekends,” Augustine said. “The only reason they bring us to town is to act humane,” his companion said. “They don’t do us any favors.” They visited the market where Augustine’s friend picked up a piece of fruit. “I dare you to take some fruit,” he whispered. “If you don’t take the fruit, you are not a man.” Augustine didn’t want to disappoint his friends, and the three students grabbed several pieces of fruit and ran. “I saw that!” the seller hollered. “Go back to school and leave us alone.” Augustine was so afraid that he trembled, but the seller didn’t chase them. He did complain to the military guard at the market about the boys. Suddenly, Augustine was overcome by the thrill of stealing the fruit. “I don’t know why they turn those young men loose on us each weekend,” the seller said. “They would be at home with their parents if they weren’t a problem.” “I agree, do you want to have them arrested?” the guard asked. “No, I have better things to do,” the seller said. “I am glad my children have learned right from wrong.” He turned his attention back to selling fruit.

About the Book
Augustine was the son of wealthy parents and born in Northern Africa. He was educated in Africa and sought a teaching career in Rome. Eventually he relocated to Milan and met his mentor and great friend Ambrose. After his mother and son died, he returned to Africa, donated much of his inheritance to the church, and worked as a priest. He was named the Bishop of Hippo and wrote many theses that influenced the direction of the growth of the Christian Church.
