The Bible does not say God wanted light and there was light. It very distinctly says that he spoke and something happened. There is something very significant about this detail to pay attention to in understanding the power of words. In the biblical text following these verses in the book of Genesis, we can observe multiple occasions where God exercises this power and through words, he creates the rest of the world as we know it. Furthermore, as we go through the other books of the bible we can see evidence of the power of words in prayer, healing, creation, destruction, and other forms of verbal command over the physical world.

About the Author
Dr. Joseph D. Wimbley is a United States Marine Corps veteran, born and raised in Miami, Florida. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business management, an MBA, a master’s degree in disaster management, and a Doctor of Theology. Wimbley has more than twenty years of public service in law enforcement and security, holding certifications at the instructor level. He served as a professor at Jacksonville Theological Seminary, teaching degree programs related to Biblical studies.
