My Experience: My partner had battled with cancer for just over two years. She went into remission, but it came back with a vengeance. This time around she was not as fortunate. After approximately a month she ended up in hospice. I sat by her side day after day. I watched this disease break her system down. I noticed that the one thing the cancer was not able to break down. That was her love for my son and me. She did not want to leave us alone and if she had her way she would fight through the pain and whatever else the cancer threw at her. It was clear and obvious to me that she was hanging on for my son and me. One day when I was sitting near her and talking, I looked in her eyes. That was the moment that I knew what I needed to do. The first thing I did was make a phone call. I called her family and gave her father and mother the time to say their final goodbyes. I sat down beside her and held her hand. I then drew in a deep breath and exhaled. Looking in her eyes, I said those words that she needed to hear. I told her that we would be okay. That I loved her and that it was okay for her to go and rest. Within a few minutes, she took her final breath. She needed me to let her go. She was able to pass on with a clear soul. I needed to let her go so my healing could begin. I was then able to start the mourning as well as the healing process.
